It is really fun to head out into the woods whether it is for hiking and recreation or for work. It is really great to just make the decision and just go. But wait!

Keeping equipment packed and ready allows you to make that decision and actually hiking prepared is extremely important. Although I consider my activities to be self sufficient, you know stuff happens.

If you are late getting home it would be very handy for somebody to know where to start looking for you. This is where the Plan comes into play. Yes discuss your planned activity but don’t expect someone to remember your plans.

I leave a quad sheet map that I print from Topo Maps + and a published map of the area I am going into. I leave notes as to when I am leaving, when I’m participating in activities, and when I am expected to be home. I leave a note as to the equipment I am bringing. There is a package at my house documenting each of my kits with narrative and pictures. That way I can just note I’m bringing my Grab & Go bag or whatever.

If you read this far, thank you. I don’t expect you to read the details on my maps. This is the Plan for today’s organized hike. Stay tuned for more preparedness pointers.
