Survival skills are the abilities and knowledge required to survive in a dangerous or challenging environment. These skills are essential for people who venture into wilderness areas or find themselves in emergency situations such as natural disasters or accidents. This could be hunters, hikers, off-road enthusiasts, or anyone who ventures off the beaten path.

Here are some essential survival skills that everyone should know:

Finding and purifying water: Water is essential for survival. In a wilderness situation, you need to know how to find and purify water. This involves learning how to locate natural sources of water such as streams, rivers, and lakes. If you are in an urban area, you may need to collect rainwater or melt snow for drinking. To purify water, you can boil it or use purification tablets. Or use any of the many commercial water purification systems such as Sawyer or Grayl.

Building a shelter: A shelter protects you from the elements and keeps you warm and dry. You can build a shelter using natural materials such as branches, leaves, and grass. It’s important to choose a site that is safe and protected from the wind and rain. Shelter also helps with thermo regulation. This is important in preventing hypothermia.

Starting a fire: Fire is essential for cooking food, purifying water, and staying warm. You can start a fire using a variety of methods including friction, sparks, and chemical reactions. You should always be careful when starting a fire and follow fire safety guidelines. Fire is also a great way to attract the attention of searchers. The smoke and light from a fire can be seen great distances.

Navigation: If you are lost in the wilderness, you need to know how to navigate. This involves using a map and compass or other navigation tools. You can also use natural features such as the sun and stars to help you find your way.

Finding food: In a survival situation, you may need to find your own food. This can involve hunting, fishing, and foraging for wild plants. It’s important to know which plants and animals are safe to eat and how to prepare them. But great care must be taken. Many plants and fungus are poisonous and can cause great illness or death. Hunting animals is a calorie exhausting endeavor and may not be worth it in the long run.

First aid: In an emergency, first aid skills can save lives. You should know how to treat injuries such as cuts, burns, and fractures. You should also know how to recognize and treat medical emergencies such as heart attacks and strokes. Also practice the ability to treat yourself. You may be out on a solo journey and injure yourself. You will need to be able to treat and stabilize any injuries.

In addition to these skills, it’s important to stay calm and focused in a survival situation. Panic can lead to poor decision making and increase the risk of injury or death. By developing these essential survival skills and staying calm under pressure, you can increase your chances of surviving in a challenging environment. And as always practice! That is what being prepared is all about.
